Given that Aaron Glenn was not selected to be the head coach of the Washington Commanders, it appears like the Detroit Lions will keep both of their coordinators.
Prior to the 2024 NFL coaching turnover, it seemed as though the Detroit Lions may lose both of its coordinators to head coaching positions. It turns out that Detroit will be welcoming back both defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn and offensive coordinator Ben Johnson. There are no longer any head coach openings because Johnson has already announced that he will be going back to Detroit and because various rumors indicate that the Washington Commanders will be hiring Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn to replace him.
With Glenn returning for a fourth season as offensive coordinator and Johnson starting his third consecutive season in that role, the Lions will have some uncanny consistency among their coaches. To put it into perspective for you, Glenn is currently tied for the third-longest stint as a defensive coordinator; the only two who have held their posts longer are Steve Spagnuolo of Kansas City and Lou Anarumo of Cincinnati. Along with six other coaches, Johnson has the longest tenure of any offensive coordinator.
According to ESPN’s Mike Clay, here is an update on the head coach, offensive coordinator, and defensive coordinator appointments as of right now:
There is still a possibility of coaching changes even if the Lions want to keep all three of their coordinators (special teams coordinator Dave Fipp excepted). Tanner Engstrand, the coordinator of the pass game, is a contender for the offensive coordinator positions with the Patriots and Buccaneers, while Antwaan Randle El, the coach of wide receivers, is a contender for the Bucs position. Furthermore, it has been claimed that Terrell Williams has agreed to join the Lions as their new defensive line coach and coordinator of the run game.
