UPDATE: San Francisco 49ers sacks Coach Following Loss in Super Bowl 58

Coach Kyle Shanahan of the San Francisco 49ers has fired defensive coordinator Steve Wilks, effective immediately. The team will be shopping for a new head coach. This is discussed one day after the coaching staff’s future was discussed.

It is unclear who made the decision—Steve Wilks or Shanahan. This indicates that the San Francisco 49ers will be looking for a defensive coordinator for the second year in a row. Under Wilks, the defense ranked third in points (17.5) during the regular season, but they were unable to duplicate that effort in the postseason.

They gave up 25.7 points a game in the team’s three playoff games. It will be intriguing to observe Wilks was not the first coach to leave the organization today; the Washington Commanders hired associate head coach and running backs coach Anthony Lynn earlier on Wednesday. It remains to be seen who the 49ers will pursue.
