The Red Sox have talked a lot of late about their trio of prospects who all cracked MLB Pipeline’s preseason Top 40 rankings. And on March 16, Marcelo Mayer, Roman Anthony and Kyle Teel will likely have the ultimate chance to showcase their skills while playing together on the main diamond at JetBlue Park against Braves top prospects as part of MLB’s inaugural Spring Breakout event. Rosters for the event will be revealed live on a special MLB Network program on March 7 at 11 a.m. ET. Here’s everything you need to know about Spring Breakout Mayer is Boston’s No. 1 prospect, and No. 15 in MLB Pipeline’s Top 100. Anthony is Pipeline’s No. 24 prospect while Teel, drafted last June, is No. 40. The game, scheduled for a first pitch of 1:05 p.m. ET, will be televised on MLB’s digital platforms, as well as NESN and MLB Network. “I’m sure that’s going to be a great time to play with my teammates and against the other top prospects from the Braves,” Mayer said. “We will be on the big field, so it will be fun.”
Spring Breakout is a new Major League Baseball initiative aimed at showcasing the game’s young talent during Spring Training. Sixteen contests will be held across Arizona and Florida — the Reds and Cardinals will play a pair each because of the uneven number of clubs in each state — as part of the series. Assuming Mayer, Anthony and Teel all suit up together that day, it will likely be a sneak preview of what’s to come when the season starts for Double-A Portland. “It will be exciting,” Mayer said. “Getting a chance to see what it will be like playing with Roman and Kyle, that’s going to be great.” All players on MLB Pipeline’s Top 100 Prospects list are eligible to participate in Spring Breakout. It remains Ceddanne Rafaela, Boston’s fourth-ranked prospect in the Top 100 at No.76, is in the running to start center field for the team, so it’s unclear if he’ll play during the Spring Breakout.
Fans who choose to attend the Spring Breakout games will receive a pack of Choice baseball cards featuring players who are involved in the event at no cost to them.
