See The Free Agent Top Player Boston Red Sox is Pressured For

Agent Scott Boras and free-agent pitcher Jordan Montgomery reportedly spoke with the Boston Red Sox.

The two parties spoke “recently” over Zoom, according to ESPN’s Buster Olney, and veteran MLB reporter Peter Gammons spoke with a National League executive who expressed optimism that a deal may be reached.

“We hear the Red Sox and Scott Boras had a good meeting recently and may get some deal eventually done on Jordan Montgomery,” the executive stated.

Montgomery played for both the Texas Rangers and the St. Louis Cardinals in 2023. Montgomery went 3-1 in five playoff starts, demonstrating why the Rangers’ World Series run was made possible by his midseason acquisition.

Montgomery has spent his whole MLB career as a reliable rotation player. Over the course of the last three seasons, he has recorded at least thirty starts, with a 38-34 career record, a 3.68 ERA, and a 1.21 WHIP.

Although it appears he might have to settle for less, Boras had planned to leverage Montgomery’s impressive postseason play into a nine-figure contract. Cody Bellinger, another Boras client, was left unsigned on the open market until earlier this week when he agreed to a three-year, $80 million contract with the Chicago Cubs. After the first two seasons of that contract, Bellinger will have player options, which will allow him some flexibility to offset the comparatively little amount of guaranteed income.

Montgomery may discover himself in a like circumstance, going on

less anticipated in terms of long-term security in return for the possibility of returning to the market at the height of his value. Nevertheless, it’s difficult to anticipate him to perform any better than he would following a World Series victory.
