The 49ers are reportedly considering a trade for Zach Wilson, the backup quarterback for the Jets. They would only need to give up a seventh-round pick to acquire Wilson, so you can see why they might be interested, especially if they liked him coming out of college, which I think they did. I bet they liked him more than Trey Lance. My advice to the 49ers is to do nothing. Don’t even sign Wilson if the Jets release him, which they should, because he is a terrible quarterback who is inaccurate, immature, lacks leadership qualities, and is disliked by teammates. In short, Wilson is everything the 49ers don’t need.
What would be the purpose of giving up on Lance, sending him to the Cowboys, allowing Sam Darnold go, and then bringing in Wilson to take his place for a year? What makes the Wilson Project preferable to the Lance Project in the eyes of the 49ers?
The 49ers don’t require a quarterback on a project. If Brock Purdy is hurt, they need a backup who is capable of playing and has the necessary experience. Someone similar to Purdy, who started the season as a backup until injuries to Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo, at which point he assumed command and immediately excelled.
Why is Purdy Purdy, you ask? Having played a lot of football in college, he is accurate, quick, small, and lacks strength in his arm. He also possesses maturity and leadership qualities. Though they fit the 49ers’ style, few teams are searching for diminutive quarterbacks with poor arms.
Taulia Tagovailoa, the younger brother of Tua Tagovailoa, is another player who might be a good fit. Despite his lack of strength in his arm, he is quick and small. During his time in college, he completed 67 percent of the 1,400 passes he attempted. He was the best player on Maryland’s three consecutive Big 10 championship teams. He carried them Rlike Iowa State was carried by Purdy.
