Five days after Garoppolo agreed to terms — and after the contract was signed and submitted with the NFL — the facts are finally out. NFL Media reports that Garoppolo’s base pay on a one-year deal with the Rams is $4.5 million. Incentives bring the maximum value to $12 million.
It’s not even worthy to boast about the highest number. If not, his agent would have ordered the many tweets announcing the transaction to state that it is worth “up to” $12 million.
With an annual salary of $27.5 million, Garoppolo was the highest-paid player in NFL history six years ago. He inked a $72.75 million, three-year contract with the Raiders last year. After he failed his physical, the contract was revised.
For Garoppolo, it still seems like a lot. And who else was after him? And who else was willing to provide almost $4.5 million?
