Social media users’ reactions to Novak Djokovic’s announcement on Wednesday, March 27, that he and Goran Ivanisevic will be splitting after six years, were mixed. Prior to it, he had been working for Marian Vajda. Under Ivanisevic, he was credited with regaining his on-court dominance and altering his serve.
Following a dismal start to the 2024 season, Djokovic has canceled the relationship. He lost badly against Luca Nardi at Indian Wells against the World No. 123 and was beaten in the semifinals of the Australian Open. He is looking to get back on the clay right now, so he is prepping for the Monte-Carlo Masters.
A few days ago, Goran and I made the decision to no longer collaborate. Our friendship was always really strong, even though our on-court chemistry had its ups and downs,” Djokovic posted on social media.
“I can still clearly recall the day I extended an invitation to Goran to join my team. In 2018, Marian and I wanted to experiment and add some magic to our serving together. Actually, since then, we have added 12 additional Grand Slams (as well as a few finals) to the record, loads of laughter, fun, and year-end no. 1 rankings to the list.
In fact, I’m glad to report—though I’m not sure he is—that in addition to our joint tournament victories, we also engaged in a side conflict.
“Whoa! Goran Ivanisevic, Novak Djokovic’s coach, has announced his departure from the player. It seems that failing to win the Australian Open even once is a reason to fire someone. It’s amazing that there have been 12 grand slams in 5 years, and a big part of that is because of the improvements he helped put in place,” another commented.
I’m shocked and devastated, Goran. I’ll miss you. Congratulations and many thanks for the amazing ride with the GOAT.”
