Ivan Ljubicic, a former world number three, thinks that Novak Djokovic’s recent problems are primarily psychological in origin.
On the ATP Tour, the Croatian was a successful player who peaked at number three in the world. His third-place finish is undoubtedly noteworthy because it came during a period when Rafael Nadal was ranked second and Roger Federer was ranked first.
He served as Federer’s coach from 2022 until his retirement at the Laver Cup, as most younger fans recall. In addition to having faced him in matches, the Croatian is familiar with Djokovic due to their shared global origins.
Ljubicic believes that Djokovic’s recent problems are more psychological in nature. It’s a bit strange to hear that because most of us know Djokovic as a mental giant. The Croatian elaborated on his position in the interview with Gazzetta Dello Sport.
Ljubicic presents an intriguing viewpoint, and it is not without validity. In his Indian Wells encounter against Luca Nardi, Djokovic appeared extremely tense and played in a totally different way from his usual style.
In Melbourne, he appeared nearly defenseless against Jannik Sinner, a trait that was also evident in the loud yelling in his box. Although Djokovic’s breakup with Goran Ivanisevic was hasty, it also demonstrates that he is seeking answers and isn’t afraid to take risks.
We won’t find out in the end, but that might also be a hint. It’s difficult to disagree with Ljubicic’s belief that Djokovic will recover.
