The Argentine international has been outstanding in recent weeks, having recovered from a hamstring injury that kept him out for about a month, with the attacker contributing many goals in a variety of games for Inter Miami.
Messi has seven goals and three assists in just six MLS matches this season, and there’s a good potential that the reigning Ballon d’Or winner will shatter several records with Inter Miami in the coming months.
And Messi is now expected to shatter one of the biggest of them all.
Pundit Andrew Wiebe believes Messi has a legitimate chance of breaking Carlos Vela’s regular season goal contribution record of 49, which the Inter Miami star might do provided he stays fit.
Wiebe stated, “He’s missing games; he’s already missed four for Inter Miami, and he’ll miss more due to Copa America, niggles, and we hope that doesn’t happen because we want to see Messi play.”
“But I was wondering, ‘How does this compare to Carlos Vela’s speed in 2019?’ Carlos Vela went straight up nuclear, contributing 49 goals.
“To put it in perspective, there’s 24 games left for Inter Miami, Messi could play in 20 in them and manage two goal contributions a game, he would get to 53, barely sneaking past Carlos Vela, but it’s entirely within the realm of possibility that he does that or more.”
Messi’s career statistics speak for themselves, with the Argentine breaking nearly every record in terms of both goals and assists.
And breaking Vela’s 49-goal contribution record might be a piece of cake for Messi, who, if he stays fit and does not leave Inter Miami for too long this summer, could easily surpass the former Mexican superstar’s score from 2019.
Messi will want to add another record to his already illustrious resume, and the 36-year-old may be able to achieve it if he stays fit and international duty does not interfere with his Inter Miami career.
