The Boston Celtics recently traded Grant Williams, a forward known for his versatility and occasional role as a point guard, to the Dallas Mavericks in a three-team deal that also involved the San Antonio Spurs. This trade marks a significant shift for both franchises, with the Celtics focusing on future draft capital and the Mavericks strengthening their defensive lineup.
Grant Williams, who entered the 2023 offseason as a restricted free agent, has agreed to a four-year, $54 million contract with Dallas.
Williams was a crucial part of Boston’s roster since being drafted in the first round in 2019, providing solid defense, three-point shooting, and positional flexibility.
His ability to guard multiple positions and contribute offensively made him a valuable asset for the Celtics, but the team’s need to balance its salary cap and plan for the future led to the decision to trade him.
As part of the trade, the Celtics received two second-round picks and the right to swap a third second-round pick with Dallas.
Specifically, Boston acquired Dallas’ second-round pick in 2030 and gained the more favorable second-round pick between the Chicago Bulls and New Orleans Pelicans in 2024. Additionally, Boston obtained the right to swap a previously acquired 2025 second-round pick with the better of Washington’s, Golden State’s, or Detroit’s second-rounders.
This move is strategic for both teams. Dallas gains a strong defender who can complement Luka Dončić and Kyrie Irving, potentially making them more competitive in the Western Conference.
Meanwhile, Boston focuses on future assets, ensuring they remain flexible for future moves or drafts. The trade highlights the ongoing adjustments teams make in response to roster needs and financial considerations, keeping them competitive in an evolving league landscape.
