Kansas City Women’s Soccer Plans $800 Million Stadium District
After a failed vote to build a downtown Kansas City Royals stadium, another of the city’s professional sports teams is planning to expand with a mixed-used entertainment district.
The Kansas City Current, the city’s National Women’s Soccer League team, will add a retail, restaurant and multifamily district to its recently opened stadium. The first phase will include $200 million in private funding and will begin construction in late 2024 with expected completion in 2026 ahead of the World Cup that year, when Kansas City is one of the North American host cities.
The team estimates that the total cost of development will be close to $800 million. The Port Authority of Kansas City, an economic development organization, authorized up to $800 million in bonds for the project in August 2023.
According to the organization, the $117 million stadium, which debuted in March, is the first in the US to be constructed just for a women’s team. It is situated on the Missouri River in the Berkley Riverfront District, just north of the city’s downtown. The Current and Marquee Development will build the entertainment district. In 2020, the team was acquired by Angie and Chris Long, the founders of Palmer Square Capital Management, located in Kansas City. Together with Brittany, they are co-owners alongside Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
Angie Long stated in a statement, “Our goal with the next phase of our investment in Berkley Riverfront Park is to reconnect Kansas Citians to their riverfront, bringing even more energy and activity to the water.” “We think that this essential investment will have a long-term positive impact on our community and solidify the Berkley Riverfront’s reputation as one of Kansas City’s best neighborhoods for both locals and tourists.”
