Former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has strongly criticized Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher for his recent comments downplaying the significance of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Carragher had stated that AFCON is not a “major tournament,” sparking outrage from African football fans and players.
Mikel, who won the 2013 AFCON with Nigeria, did not hold back in his response. He called Carragher’s comments “ignorant and disrespectful” and reminded him of the competition’s rich history and global significance. “AFCON is one of the biggest international tournaments in the world, producing top talents and showcasing incredible football,” Mikel stated.
The former Chelsea star emphasized that African players have made a huge impact on European football, with many dominating top leagues. He pointed out that clubs heavily rely on African stars, and their absence during AFCON often affects team performances, proving its importance.
Mikel also questioned Carragher’s understanding of football outside Europe. “If you don’t respect AFCON, you don’t respect African football,” he added, urging pundits to educate themselves before making such dismissive remarks.
Several African footballers and fans have backed Mikel’s stance, calling for more recognition of AFCON’s value. The tournament, held every two years, has produced legendary players like Didier Drogba, Samuel Eto’o, and George Weah, further proving its credibility.
Mikel’s response has reignited the debate on the global recognition of African football, with many calling for an end to disrespectful narratives from European pundits.
